You have a key. That was year one. She gave it to you crying at a kitchen table and said she did not want you to have to knock any more.
So you let yourself in on a Wednesday and a Saturday, and you do the washing up that is there and you open one curtain, not all of them, because you learned that early, and you put something on a plate whether or not she eats it.
And every single time, before you go, you stand at the bottom of those stairs and say a blessing over her out loud. She knows you do it. She said once, from upstairs, in a completely flat voice, thanks. That was about eighteen months ago and she has not said anything about it since.
Two years. Call it two hundred times.
She is not worse. You should say that, because for a while she was, and you were frightened, and there was a bad autumn nobody talks about now.
She is not better either. She has a good doctor and she takes what she is given and she goes when she is told, and you would drive her yourself if she did not, and none of that is in question and none of it is going to be.
She is exactly where she has been for about a year, which is up some days, and not others, and mostly in that room with one curtain open.
And you were driving home last Wednesday and something arrived that you did not send for and have not repeated to anybody: what am I actually doing at the bottom of those stairs.

The seen is not where the accounting happens
Sit in the car a minute before you go in. I am not going to give you a new approach and I am not going to ask what you have tried.
Let me put a true thing down first, and Scripture holds me to it and the Spirit will not have me being clever with a woman who has a key to somebody's house: you have not been doing it wrong. Nothing in this article suggests that a different wording, or more faith, or saying it upstairs instead of downstairs, or claiming something more specific, would have lifted her. Anybody who says that to you is guessing, and what they are really doing is making a sick woman's illness into your report card, and God has never once done that.
And a second thing, because it matters more here than anywhere: keep the doctor. Keep the appointments. Keep driving her. Nothing in this article is a reason to reduce any of that by a single tablet or a single visit, and any article that made you wonder should be shut immediately.
Now come and look at what Paul says he is looking at, in a passage about being worn down.
While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.2 Corinthians 4:18
Read what he is doing there. He is not denying the visible. Three verses earlier he is perfectly frank about the outward man perishing, which is a man describing his own body wearing out and not pretending otherwise.
What he is saying is that the visible is not the whole ledger, and that it is the shorter of the two columns. Temporal against eternal. He is not asking you to stop seeing the room with one curtain open. He is telling you that the room with one curtain open is not where the accounting is kept.
Two years of words over that staircase are not measurable by what you can see from the hallway, and they were never going to be. That is not me consoling a friend in a car. That is what is written, and what the verse says about which column is which, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a car outside a house you have a key to.
Here is what nobody explains about blessing somebody who is ill. When you say those words at the bottom of the stairs, you are not administering anything. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about a woman He made. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it, and He does not report back on Wednesdays, and He has never once required her to feel it for it to have been said.
A blessing is not a dose, and her mood on a Saturday is not its readout. Scripture says the secret things belong unto the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong unto us (Deuteronomy 29:29), and the Spirit has never handed a friend a chart. What was revealed to you was that you speak good over the people you love. That you have done, two hundred times, into a stairwell.
What arrived in the car
Now let me name it gently, because I do not think you have said it out loud and I would rather it was said out loud than left to set. What is written will hold it, and the Spirit is not accusing you of anything.
What am I actually doing. That is not a betrayal of your friend and it is not a failure of faith. It is arithmetic arriving in a place arithmetic does not belong. Two hundred times, one visible outcome, and a mind that is good with numbers produces a ratio and the ratio produces a verdict.
And a verdict like that does something specific, which is why I want it named. It does not usually make a person stop coming. It makes them stop saying it. They still do the washing up and still open the one curtain and one Wednesday they simply do not stand at the bottom of the stairs, and nothing announces itself, and that is how a two-year faithfulness ends.
That is not weakness and I will not call it that. It is what happens when love and a measurable thing sit in a hallway together for two years. And what is written never once asked you to compute it, and the Spirit is not in the passenger seat with the figures.
God did not ask you to lift her, and He has never once made another person's illness the grade on your obedience. It is written that we are laborers together with God (1 Corinthians 3:9), together, which is a word that divides work between two parties, and the same Spirit who breathed it is in that hallway every Wednesday and Saturday, which is why it reads as a description of the arrangement rather than as encouragement.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you she will get better if you keep going, and I am not telling you she will not. I have no authority to promise you an outcome and I am not going to trade you one for two years of Wednesdays. What God does in that room is His, entirely, and it may take a shape neither of us picks.
What I can put in your hands is this: two hundred blessings have not come back to God empty, and their worth was never resting on whether she came downstairs. God's word does not come back to Him void (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a woman who has kept coming for two years without one encouraging sign has done something heaven wrote down.
So here is what is true in that car, with the key in your hand.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before either of you was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit has carried every one of those two hundred out of that hallway. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not your faithfulness. There is no missing piece and there never was one.
You have been doing the only part that was ever yours, and you have done it two hundred times without one report to keep you going. Nobody has ever had to see a lift in order for God to have received what was spoken. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what happens to your friend. That belongs to God and to the ordinary means He works through, including a good doctor and a medication review, and anybody who hands you a timetable is taking something from you. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the things which are seen are temporal, and the room with one curtain open is in the shorter column.
Two years at the bottom of those stairs. Go in and say it again today.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing in your own kitchen, out loud, before you drive over, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because two years produced something you can point at. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your friend is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to a thing that arrived in your car last Wednesday. What God does in that room is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Two years of a room with the curtains shut, you are what I can see and you are not all of what is there. Scripture says the things which are seen are temporal and the things which are not seen are eternal.
- Ratio that arrived in my car on the way home, two hundred said and nothing shown, get out in the name of Jesus. It is written that we are laborers together with God, and together is a word that splits the work between two parties.
- Lord, You have gone through that hallway two hundred times and You never once needed her to come downstairs. I thank You, because Your face is shining on my friend today and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing at the bottom of those stairs to say it again.
