Blessed At LastMatthew 3:17

Forty-One and Down in the Water

This message is for the woman baptized at forty-one who came up out of the water and realized, in front of everybody, that nobody in her whole life had ever said one good thing over her by name

You come up out of that water with your hair flat to your head and forty people cheering, and it is the best five seconds of your entire life.

The pastor has one hand behind your back and the other in the air. Somebody's auntie is on her feet. Your friend from work who does not come to church is filming it and crying, which you will never let her forget. The water is warmer than you expected and the towel is not big enough and you are laughing like a person who has just been let out of somewhere.

And then, standing there dripping, in the middle of the loudest joy you have ever been in, a thought comes down the middle of you like a cold line.

Forty-one years old, and not one person has ever said a good thing over you on purpose.

Not your mother, who worked two jobs and had nothing left. Not a teacher. Not a man. Not at any birthday, not at any table, never. Everybody in this yard is cheering for what just happened. Nobody in your whole life has ever stood in front of you and said something about who you are.

You did not know it was missing. And now, on the best day you have had, you cannot un-know it.

Forty-One and Down in the Water

The order the Father put the words in

Now come and stand over here with me a minute, out of the noise. Bring the towel.

Let me do the first thing first, and Scripture holds me to it and the Spirit will not let me do it any other way: nobody in your history is on trial here. Not your mother with two jobs. Not one teacher who had thirty-four of you. I am not going to build a case, because you did not walk out of that water carrying one and I am not about to hand you one now. The absence is a fact. A fact is not a verdict.

Now look with me at another baptism, and look at what was said and when it was said.

And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.Matthew 3:17

Get the timing of that, because the timing is the whole doctrine. This is at the start. Jesus has not preached a sermon. He has not healed anybody, fed anybody, raised anybody, or gone to a cross. Not one work of public ministry has happened yet. And the Father opens heaven and says beloved, and says well pleased, before the work.

That is God on the record about the order He does things in. The word comes first. The life comes after. The word is not a report card issued at the end; it is the ground the life is built on.

You came up out of that water into the same order, and God did not put your forty-one years in front of it as a condition. That is not me being kind to a woman in a wet towel. That is the sequence of the text, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence spoken over a river and lands it in a churchyard.

Here is what nobody explains. When a mother says something good over a daughter, she is not producing anything. She is agreeing out loud with what God has already said about that girl. Her mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. And if the power sat in the mouth, then a woman whose house was too tired for words would be unblessed for life, and God has never written a rule that unjust.

There is no reduced portion for the ones nobody got around to. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), all of it, past tense, and the Spirit is the one who carries a settled thing out of heaven into a woman standing on wet grass.

Why forty-one years of silence proves nothing

Now let me take something off you, because I have watched you carry it and call it being realistic. What is written will lift it clean off, and the Spirit is the one lifting.

You worked out, somewhere in your twenties, that the reason nobody says anything over you is that you are the sort of person there is nothing to say about. Not bad. Just ordinary. The kind that gets thanked for covering a shift and never gets talked about at a wedding. You have organized a whole personality around not needing it, and you have been quietly proud of that, and tonight in a churchyard the whole arrangement fell over in five seconds.

That is not being realistic. That is a woman marking her own paper in the dark, and what is written never once agreed with the mark. The Spirit is here to say so out loud, on this grass, tonight.

God has known your name since before that church had a font, and He has never once confused you with the work you do or the shifts you cover. It is written that He calls His own sheep by name (John 10:3), which is a detail He did not have to include, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is holding it up in front of you now, which is why it lands like evidence and not like a compliment.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you the silence was secretly good for you, or that it made you independent, or any of that. Forty-one years is a long time and I am not going to decorate it. What I am telling you is that the blessing was never routed through the people who did not say it, so their silence never once got between you and it.

The good word you noticed missing tonight was spoken before you had done anything at all, and it will not be withdrawn if you do nothing tomorrow. God has blessed us, past tense, in Christ, and His word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one doing the carrying, in a churchyard, on the best night of your life.

The breakthrough

So here is where we are standing, in this yard, with your hair still dripping.

The blessing exists. God spoke it, He settled it in Christ before you were born, it is written down where anybody can go and check me, and the Holy Spirit is here on this grass to make it live and not merely be true. What was missing was never the blessing. What was missing was a voice, and yours has been going all night; you have thanked about thirty people since you got out of that water.

You are blessed, right now, wet and cold and laughing, and the fact that you noticed the gap tonight does not mean you have been outside anything. Nobody has ever had to produce a feeling or a track record to receive what God has already said. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what your family says at the next birthday. That belongs to God, and I have no authority to promise you a speech, and you have had enough people promise you things. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: the Father said beloved before the Son had done one single work, and He has never once run that order backward for anybody.

Forty people cheered tonight for what you did. Now go and hear the older word, the one about who you are, which was said first, and let His Spirit be the one who says it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, out loud, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you finally did something big enough. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own head is His, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, in your own bathroom, to the cold line that came down the middle of you in a churchyard. Whatever He does about the people who never said it, that is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Forty-one years with nobody saying it, you are long and you are over. Scripture says the voice came before the work, and God has never once run that order backward.
  2. Mark I gave my own paper in the dark, get out of this bathroom in the name of Jesus. It is written that He calls His own sheep by name, and He has never confused me with a shift I covered.
  3. Lord, You said beloved before there was anything to point at, and You are saying it over me now. I thank You, because Your face is shining and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am standing here with wet hair hearing who I am.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
