Over My ChildrenPsalm 139:13

All Week They Gave Me Numbers

This message is for the mother sitting beside an incubator on day nine, who has been handed weights and oxygen figures every shift and has not yet said one word over her own daughter

Nine days in, you can read the monitor better than you can read a bus timetable.

You know that the number in blue is oxygen saturation and you know what it does when she is unsettled and what it does when she is asleep, and you know it comes back up, and you know roughly how long you can watch it go down before you press the button.

You know her weight in grams. You know it from the day she came and you know it this morning and you know the difference. You know how many milliliters, how many hours, what the doctor said on Tuesday and how he said it, which is a separate piece of information you have also stored.

Everybody in that unit has been kind. That is not a complaint about anybody. The nurse with the low voice who says good morning, Mummy has been the reason you have not come apart. They tell you the numbers because the numbers are what they have and because they are careful people who do not want to promise you anything.

But it is nine days, and you were sitting there tonight at about eleven with your hand through the porthole and one finger against her whole back, and something came up in you from a long way down.

Nobody has said anything about her. Not one thing. Not who she is, not what she is going to be, nothing good on purpose, out loud, over the top of her. Nine days of measurement and not one word.

Including you. That is the part you cannot get past. Not even you.

All Week They Gave Me Numbers

The making of her was finished in the dark

Sit back a second. Let the chair take your weight. I am not going to hurry you and there is nothing in this you have to do well.

First thing, and Scripture holds me to it and the Spirit will not let me be careless with it: nobody in that unit is on trial. They are giving you numbers because numbers are the honest thing they have, and a careful person will not hand a mother a promise they cannot keep. That restraint is a kindness even when it feels like a wall. The absence of words is real and it is not anybody's cruelty.

Now come and look at where you actually are, because there is a psalm about this exact place and it is not a general one.

For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.Psalm 139:13-14

Look at the tense and look at the location. Thou hast. Finished. And the place where it was finished was a dark, hidden, unobserved place where nobody was measuring anything and nobody could see. God did the whole of it there, and the psalm calls the result fearfully and wonderfully made, and that verdict was in before any instrument in that room had ever been switched on.

That baby was finished before she was weighed, and no number on that chart is a report on who she is. That is not comfort I am handing a frightened mother at eleven at night. That is what the psalm says about where a person is made and when the making is done, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it beside an incubator.

Here is what nobody explains in a unit like that. When a mother speaks a blessing over her child, she is not producing anything and she is not summoning anything. She is agreeing out loud with what God has already said about that child. Her mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. Which means it does not depend on you being calm, and it does not depend on you being certain, and it certainly does not depend on the blue number.

You are permitted to say something good over your daughter tonight, and nothing in her chart makes that premature. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), settled, past tense, and the Spirit is the one who carries a finished thing out of heaven into a room that smells of hand gel.

Why the silence has held for nine days

Now let me name the thing gently, because I do not think it is what you have been telling yourself it is. What is written is going to answer it, and the Spirit is not in a hurry with you.

You have not done one thing wrong in nine days of saying nothing, and no silence of yours has been holding anything back. That is what is written about a Father of lights with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, and the Spirit has never treated a frightened mother's quiet as a fault to be corrected.

You have not said anything over her because saying something good out loud feels like tempting fate. It feels like getting ahead of the numbers. There is a quiet arithmetic that starts in a room like that, where hoping out loud seems to cost something, and where the safest posture is to want nothing too specifically in case wanting it is the thing that takes it away.

I want to be plain: that is not superstition on your part and I am not going to call it that. It is what a mind does when it has been frightened for nine days with no way to act. But what is written never once made a good word a risk, and the Spirit has never treated a mother's hope as a provocation.

God is not made angry by a woman saying a good thing over her own child, and heaven does not run on the arithmetic that is running in that room. It is written that every good gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning (James 1:17), which is a sentence about a God who does not change His mind based on what somebody dared to say out loud. The same Spirit who breathed that line is sitting in that chair with you.

And hear what I am not doing, because in a room like that it matters more than anywhere. I am not telling you that a blessing changes a number. It is not a technique and it is not leverage and I will not imply it, tonight of all nights. What God does in that incubator is His, entirely, and I have no authority to promise you a Thursday. Anybody who does is taking something from you.

What is yours is the saying, and the saying is real and it is not premature and it is not a bargain. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a baby who cannot hear you yet cannot make it less true over her.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in that chair at eleven at night, with the monitor doing what it does.

You are her mother, and the first word over that child belongs to you before it belongs to anybody in that building. That is what is written about a God who finished her where nothing could be measured, and the Spirit is the one carrying it into a room that smells of hand gel.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before that girl was born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is in that room to carry it through an ordinary mouth. What is missing is not the words. What is missing is one sentence out loud over a baby who has had nine days of numbers, and you are her mother, and it belongs to you before it belongs to anybody in that building.

You are the one God appointed to speak over that child, and being terrified has never once disqualified anybody from it. Nobody has ever had to be composed to be used for this. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what tomorrow's numbers do. That belongs to God, and I will not stand beside an incubator and pretend otherwise, and I think you would rather I did not. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: she was knit together in a place where nothing could be measured, and the verdict on her was in before the first machine was ever switched on.

They have given you nine days of numbers. Tonight, give her a word.

Declare this over yourself

Say these quietly, out loud, in that chair, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because you have held it together well enough this week. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own daughter is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, over a chart that has had the only voice in this room for nine days. What God does in that incubator is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Nine days of numbers on a chart, you are the care she is getting and you are not the account of her. Scripture says God knit her together in the secret place, and He was finished long before anybody weighed her.
  2. Fear that saying something good out loud will cost her something, get out of this room in the name of Jesus. It is written that with the Father of lights there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, and heaven has never once run on that arithmetic.
  3. Lord, You made her where nobody could see and You called it wonderful. I thank You, because Your face is shining on my daughter tonight and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and my hand is on this glass and I am saying her name out loud.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
