Two Years of Saying It Over Her and the Scan Is the Same

The consultant is a decent man and he chose his words carefully, which is how you knew before he finished the sentence.

Stable. That was the word. No significant change since the previous imaging. Which is, he was careful to say, not bad news.

You drove home. She talked about her sister's kitchen extension for most of the journey and you let her, because that is what she does when she is not going to talk about the other thing, and you have been married thirty-eight years and you know the difference between a woman who is chatting and a woman who is holding a door shut.

And what has been going round in you since the car park, and what you have not said to her or to anybody, is a piece of arithmetic.

Seven hundred and thirty mornings. That is roughly what it is. Every morning since the first appointment, before she is properly awake, you have stood at the end of the bed or sat on the edge of it and said the same words over her. Out loud. Not in your head. You made a decision about that early on.

Seven hundred and thirty times, and the picture on that screen is the same picture.

You are not angry with God. You want that understood. You have not lost anything and you are not in a crisis.

What you have is a question you cannot make respectable enough to ask out loud: what have I been doing every morning for two years?

The rain does not come back dry

Sit down for a minute. I am not going to tell you that stable is a blessing in disguise, and I am not going to ask you how you are coping.

Let me put a true thing down first, and Scripture will hold me to it and the Spirit will not have me flattering a man in his seven hundred and thirtieth morning: nothing about this is your fault, and nothing in this article is going to suggest that you have been saying it wrong. There is no technique you have missed. There is no better wording. If somebody has told you to speak it with more conviction, or to stop saying it in case that is the problem, they were guessing, and I am not going to guess at you.

Now come and look at what a word of God is actually described as doing.

For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void.Isaiah 55:10-11

Look at the picture He chose. Not a switch. Not a lever, not a transaction, not a machine with an input and a reading.

Rain.

And rain has properties that matter here. It falls on everything. It does its work underneath, where nobody watches it. It does not report. There is no morning on which a farmer can look at a field and see what the rain did yesterday specifically, and yet no farmer in history has concluded from that that the rain was not doing anything.

And notice what God guarantees and what He conspicuously does not. He guarantees that His word does not come back void. He does not say when the bud appears, or what it looks like, or that you get to watch it.

The word you have spoken over her seven hundred and thirty times has not come back to God empty, and He has never once promised to show you the underneath. That is not me consoling a man on a bad afternoon. That is exactly what the passage guarantees and exactly where it stops, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a bedroom at first light.

Here is what nobody explains when they teach people to speak blessings. When you say those words over your wife, you are not operating anything. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said. Your mouth is a door. God is the one going through it, and He does not file a report on the other side.

A blessing is not an input, and a scan is not its readout. Scripture says the secret things belong unto the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong unto us (Deuteronomy 29:29), which is God dividing the territory Himself: the results are His side, the speaking is yours, and the Spirit has never once handed a man a way of checking.

What the arithmetic is doing to you

Now let me name the thing carefully, because I do not think you have said it to yourself in these words. What is written will name it without accusing you, and the Spirit has no interest in accusing you either.

You have been keeping a count. Not deliberately, not as a bargain, and I am not accusing you of trying to buy anything. But a man who says a thing seven hundred and thirty times knows it is seven hundred and thirty, and the moment a number exists, a ratio starts forming quietly in the back of a mind: this much said, this much shown.

And a ratio turns a blessing into a transaction without anybody deciding to.

That is not greed and it is not weak faith. It is what a mind does with repetition and a measurable outcome sitting in the same room. And what is written never once invited you to compute it, and the Spirit is not standing behind you with the figures.

God did not ask you to produce anything in that bedroom, and He has never once made the reading on a screen the verdict on your obedience. It is written that the just shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4), a sentence given to a prophet who had been complaining, at length and out loud, that nothing was visibly happening, and the same Spirit who breathed it is in that room at six in the morning, which is why it lands as a ruling and not as a slogan.

Hear what I am not doing, and this matters more here than anywhere. I am not telling you that the scan will change if you keep going, and I am not telling you it will not. I have no authority to promise you an outcome and I am not going to trade you one for your faithfulness. I am also not telling you to reduce the medical care by so much as an appointment; the consultant is doing his job and you should let him.

What I can put in your hands is this: the speaking is not wasted, and it never was, and its worth was never resting on the picture. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and seven hundred and thirty mornings of that is a considerable weather system over a woman who does not even know you do it.
