The salt cellar is the right height. That is genuinely why it lives on the table.
You worked it out about four years ago, in the first flat, and you have moved twice since and the arrangement has come with you. Phone leaning against the salt, angled slightly, whatever is on this week, and a bowl of something on your knees or on the table depending on what it is.
You have not eaten a meal in a quiet room since you were about twenty-four.
It is not sad. You want that said, because when people describe this back to you it always comes out sad, and it is not. You have friends. You are out three or four nights a week. You are on the phone to your sister most days. This is not a person eating alone in the dark; this is a person eating alone at half past eight with an episode on, which is what nearly everyone you know does.
It is only that you had a thing happen last week. Your Wi-Fi was out for about an hour and you had already made the food, and you sat down with it and there was nothing to put against the salt.
And you ate about four mouthfuls in the quiet and then went and found something on your phone using data, because you could not do it.
That is the bit that has stayed with you. Not that it was quiet. That you could not do four minutes of it.

He stopped before He handed anything out
Sit down for a second, and leave the phone where it is for now. I am not going to tell you to delete anything.
Let me put a true thing down first, and Scripture holds me to it and the Spirit is not in the business of making a young woman feel bad about a habit that half the country has: there is nothing shameful about a screen at a meal. It is not a moral failure and it is not evidence of anything about your life, and anybody who tells you it is has probably not eaten alone very often. Nobody is on trial in this flat.
But you noticed something in an hour without Wi-Fi, and noticing is worth following, so come and look at something Christ did before a meal that everybody skips past to get to the miracle.
And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down.John 6:11
Five thousand people. A crisis of logistics. A boy's lunch and an enormous problem, and every reason in the world to move fast.
And what He does is stop. When he had given thanks. Before the distributing, before the miracle, before anything is solved, there is a pause with words in it. He does not do it on the way. He does it first, and everything else in the account happens after it.
That is not a detail about manners. It is where the whole thing turns: the giving of thanks comes before the giving out, in that order, deliberately, in a moment where you would forgive Him for skipping it.
You have thirty seconds available before your food that Christ Himself did not skip in front of five thousand people. That is not me making something spiritual out of a bowl of pasta. That is what is written, and the sequence the account records, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it on a small table with a salt cellar on it.
Here is what nobody explains about saying something over food. When you speak over your supper, you are not performing and you are not making the meal into an occasion. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about His own provision. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. It takes about six seconds and nobody has to see you do it.
A blessing over a bowl in a flat is not a lesser thing than a blessing over a table of five thousand. Scripture says nothing is to be refused if it be received with thanksgiving (1 Timothy 4:4), and there is no clause in it about numbers, and the Spirit is the one who makes that live in a room rather than merely be true in a book.
What the four minutes exposed
Now let me name the thing gently, because I think you already got most of the way there on your own last week.
It was not that the quiet was unbearable. Four minutes is not unbearable and you know that.
What is written has never once called that a fault, and the Spirit is not lecturing you about it. It was that you have not had an unaccompanied thought at half past eight in four years, and when one arrived with no episode on top of it, it arrived at full volume, and you did what any sensible person does with a sudden loud thing, which is turn something else on.
You are not avoiding your life. You are simply never in a room with it while eating.
That is not a fault and I will not call it one. It is what a generation was handed, and what is written never once required silence before a meal could be blessed. The Spirit is not asking you to eat every dinner in a quiet room for the rest of your life.
God is in that flat at half past eight, and He is not waiting behind an episode for it to finish. It is written that He is not far from every one of us, and that in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:27-28), which Paul said to a crowd of strangers who were not religious at all, and the same Spirit who breathed that is in this room with the salt cellar, which is why it reads as a fact about where He is rather than an invitation to try harder.
Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to stop watching things, to eat every meal in silence, to take up a practice, or to do anything at all with your evenings that you would resent by Thursday. Nothing here is a discipline and nothing here is graded. Put it back on after.
What you say over a bowl with the screen face down is a real thing, and six seconds of it is a whole blessing. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a woman saying eight words at a little table is doing exactly what happened on a hillside before anything got handed out.
So here is what is true at that little table, with the bowl going cold while you read this.
You have six seconds tonight that Christ Himself did not skip in front of five thousand people. That is what is written about a hillside and a boy's lunch, and the Spirit is the one who carries a word out of a small flat at half past eight.
The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ long before you were born, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here at half past eight to make it live rather than only be accurate. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not company. What is missing is six seconds with a screen face down.
You are not eating outside anything, and there is no reduced blessing for a person who eats alone with something on. Nobody has ever had to be in company to receive what God has already said. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what it does to your evenings, or whether the quiet gets easier, or whether you ever eat four minutes of anything without a screen again. That belongs to God, and I would not hand you a target. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: with five thousand people waiting and a boy's lunch in His hands, Christ stopped and gave thanks before He gave anything out.
You have had four years of a salt cellar holding something up. Tonight, put it face down for six seconds, and let His Spirit carry what you say.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting at that table, out loud, before you eat, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because your evenings finally look the way somebody thinks they should. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own supper is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to four years of never once being in a room with your own half past eight. What God does with the quiet is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Screen propped against the salt, you are company and you are not what I am fed by. Scripture says He took the loaves and when He had given thanks He distributed, and He stopped before He handed anything out.
- Reflex that turns something on the second a thought arrives at full volume, get out of this flat in the name of Jesus. It is written that He is not far from every one of us and that in Him we live and move and have our being, and Paul said that to strangers who were not religious at all.
- Lord, You are in this room at half past eight and You are not waiting for an episode to finish. I thank You, because Your face is shining on a bowl on a little table and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and my phone is face down and I am saying it out loud.
