Bless The TableEcclesiastes 9:7

My Breakfast Is at Seven in the Evening

This message is for the night shift nurse who eats her first meal of the day at seven in the evening standing in a kitchen where everyone else has finished, and feels like she lives in a different house from her family

Everybody else has eaten. The dishwasher is on. There is a pan soaking that you did not use and will wash.

You come down at about ten to seven, in your uniform, with your hair done, and the kitchen smells of a meal that happened without you and there is a plate under a bowl in the microwave that somebody kindly saved and that you are not going to eat because it is seven in the evening and this is your breakfast.

So it is cereal. It is nearly always cereal, standing at the counter, in about four minutes, with your car keys already on the side.

Then you go.

You have done nights for six years. You do not hate them. The money is better, the ward is calmer, and you are, genuinely, good at three in the morning in a way that most people are not.

It is only that your daughter said something last week that has been sitting in you. She was doing something for school about family traditions, and she asked what your family does, and then she answered her own question before you could, and said, well, we do not really all eat together, because of Mum.

She did not mean anything by it. She was fourteen and filling in a box.

And what has been going round in you since is not guilt exactly. It is that you have eaten your first meal of every working day standing up in a kitchen where everybody else has finished, for six years, and nobody has ever said anything over any of it, including you.

My Breakfast Is at Seven in the Evening

He put the accepting before the eating

Put the keys down for a second. You have twelve minutes and I am not going to spend them making you feel bad about a rota.

Let me say the true thing first, and Scripture will hold me to it and the Spirit is not going to accuse a woman who works nights: your hours are not a failure of family life. You are good at three in the morning, and there are people in this world who got to a morning because you were, and that is not a small thing to be able to say. Nobody in this kitchen is on trial, and neither is a fourteen year old filling in a box.

Now come and look at a verse that is usually read as though it were about a party.

Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works.Ecclesiastes 9:7

Read the for. That word is doing all the work in the sentence, because it makes the eating a consequence and not a reward.

He does not say, do good work and then you may eat with joy. He says eat with joy because God has already accepted what you do. The accepting comes first, in the past tense, and it is settled, and then the ordinary meal happens on top of it.

And notice what is not in it. No time is specified. No company is required. No table, no hour, no household in attendance. Just a person, some bread, and a verdict that has already been given.

God has already accepted what you do, including six years of three in the morning, and the eating at seven in the evening comes after that verdict and not before it. That is not me being warm to a woman with her keys on the side. That is what is written, and what the verse orders and in what sequence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that old and lays it in a kitchen that has already been tidied.

Here is what nobody explains about saying something over food. When you speak over that bowl, you are not making a small meal into a ceremony. You are agreeing out loud with what God has already said about His own provision and about His own acceptance of you. Your mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. It takes six seconds out of twelve minutes.

A blessing over cereal at seven in the evening is not a strange blessing over a strange meal. Scripture says every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving (1 Timothy 4:4), and there is no clause in it about the clock, and the Spirit is the one who makes that live in a kitchen rather than merely be true in a book.

What being out of step has quietly done

Now let me name the thing gently, because I do not think it is what your daughter meant and I do not think it is guilt.

What is written never made an hour a qualification, and the Spirit keeps no rota. Six years of eating at the wrong end of everybody else's day does something that nobody warns you about: it stops feeling like a schedule and starts feeling like a category. You are not a member of the household's mealtimes; you are the exception that gets mentioned when somebody fills in a box for school.

And an exception does not bless its own supper, because an exception does not quite think of itself as having one.

That is not self-pity and I am not going to call it that. It is what happens to a person who is structurally out of step for long enough, and what is written never once required a household to be synchronized before a word could be said over its food. The Spirit is not on anybody else's timetable either.

God is in that kitchen at ten to seven, and He is not still at the table with the meal that happened at half five. It is written that the darkness and the light are both alike to Him, and that even the night shall be light about me (Psalm 139:11-12), which is David deliberately naming the hours most people write off, and the same Spirit who breathed it is with you at three in the morning on that ward, which is why it reads as a fact about where He is and not as a compliment about shift work.

Hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you to change your hours, to eat with the family on your days off as a project, or to say anything at all to your daughter about that box. Nothing here is a plan and nothing here is graded. If tomorrow you eat it standing in four minutes, nothing is lost.

What you say over a bowl at seven in the evening is a real thing, and it is not a reduced version of grace at a proper dinner. God's word does not come back to Him empty (Isaiah 55:11), and the Spirit is the one carrying it, and a woman saying seven words in a tidied kitchen with her keys on the side is doing exactly what happens at a full table.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true in that kitchen with twelve minutes on the clock.

You are inside that verse and not outside it, and God accepted the work before any hour was mentioned. That is what is written, in that order, and the Spirit is the one who carries a settled verdict into a kitchen where everybody else has already finished.

The blessing exists. God settled it in Christ before you took your first night shift, it is written down where anybody can go and read it, and the Holy Spirit is here at ten to seven. What is missing is not the words, and it is certainly not six years of being good at three in the morning. What is missing is one sentence over a bowl of cereal.

You are not an exception to your own household, and there is no reduced blessing for a meal eaten at the wrong end of the day. Nobody has ever had to be in step to receive what God has already said. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, God is the one who fills the hand, and the Spirit does the carrying; what He carries is what is written.

I am not going to tell you what it does to your family, or to that box on a school form, or to anything at all about the rota. That belongs to God. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: God accepteth thy works, present tense, already, and the instruction to eat with joy comes after that verdict and rests on it.

You have had six years of a bowl at the counter with the keys beside it. Tonight, sit down for four minutes, and let His Spirit carry what you say.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing in that kitchen, out loud, before you eat, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because your hours finally fit somebody else's. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own bread is His authority, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, to six years of eating at the wrong end of everybody else's day. What God does on that ward tonight is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.

  1. Bowl of cereal at seven in the evening, you are my breakfast and you are not a strange meal. Scripture says go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, for God now accepteth thy works, and He put the accepting before the eating.
  2. Category I have quietly put myself in as the exception in this house, get out of this kitchen in the name of Jesus. It is written that the darkness and the light are both alike to Him, and David named the hours most people write off on purpose.
  3. Lord, You are in this kitchen at ten to seven and You are with me at three in the morning. I thank You, because Your face is shining on a bowl of cereal and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am sitting down at my own table to eat it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
