You have said I did not do it in two languages more times than you can count, and never once about yourself.
That is the work. A man says a sentence in the box and you say it again in English, in his register, at his speed, in the first person, because that is the rule: you speak as I even though the I is never you. You have been a frightened nineteen year old. You have been a landlord, a surgeon, a woman explaining why she went back. You have said my daughter about children you have never met.
Twenty years of it. You are very good. People say so, in the way people say so about a service.
Tonight you are in a side room off the corridor waiting for a hearing that has been pushed to four fifteen, and there is a radiator ticking and a window with tall light in it, and you have twenty minutes and no phone signal and nothing to do.
And in the quiet, something surfaces that has never had room to surface before.
Every sentence that has ever been in your mouth belonged to somebody else. Not one of them was about you. Not one good thing has ever been said over you, on purpose, by anybody, in either of your languages.
And the strange part, the part you would not say out loud to a colleague, is that you do not know how to want it. You have no shape for it. It is like being told there is a room in your house you have never been in.

A sentence with your own name in it
Let me not rush this. You have twenty minutes and I am not going to fill them with noise. What is written keeps in a quiet room, and the Spirit has never needed volume.
Here is the first thing, and Scripture and the Spirit both hold me to it. Nobody is at fault here, and I am not going to construct a case against anyone. Your parents were not withholding. Your colleagues are not unkind. You have simply lived a whole life in a role where you are structurally invisible, on purpose, professionally, and being unnamed became so normal that it stopped registering as an absence. That is not cruelty. It is what happens to a person who is very good at standing in for others for twenty years. The absence is real, and an absence is not a verdict.
Now let me put a sentence in front of you that has nothing to do with your work.
But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.Isaiah 43:1
Read what He does there. He does not say I have called out. He says I have called thee by thy name. That is God declining to speak generally. That is the most specific thing a voice can do, and He does it first, before the promise, before anything else in the chapter.
You have already been called by your own name, out loud, by God, and there was no interpreter in the room when He did it. I am not being warm with you to fill twenty minutes. That is the written line, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes something that specific and lays it in a side room with a ticking radiator.
Here is the piece nobody explains. When a mother says something good over a daughter, she is not inventing it. She is agreeing out loud with what God has already said about that girl. Her mouth is a door. God is the one coming through it. And if the weight sat in the mouth, then a woman whose family did not do that sort of talking would be unblessed for life, and God has never written a rule that arbitrary.
There is no reduced version of this for people nobody thought to say it to. Scripture says God has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3), the whole of it, finished, and the Spirit is the one who carries a settled thing out of a page and into a person sitting in a chair with her lanyard off.
Not knowing how to want it is not the same as not needing it
Now the harder part, and I want to go gently, because I do not think you have ever been here before. What is written will do the work, and the Spirit will set the pace.
You said, or nearly said, that you do not know how to want it. I want to stay with that rather than hurry past it, because it is the truest thing in this room. You are not a woman refusing a blessing. You are a woman who has no category for one. Nobody ever put the shape in your hands, so the space where it goes reads as nothing rather than as missing.
That is not a defect in you, and Scripture never once wrote it up as one. That is what happens when a thing is absent from the beginning: it does not feel like a hole, it feels like the normal shape of a room. The Spirit is here to put a light on in it.
God has known your name since before you had a second language to put it in, and He has never once mistaken you for the voice that carries other people. It is written that He knew you before He formed you (Jeremiah 1:5), and the same Spirit who breathed that line into the prophet is the one holding it up in front of you in this side room, which is why it reads as testimony and not as a compliment.
And hear what I am not doing. I am not telling you the invisibility was secretly a gift so that you will feel better about twenty years of it. It has cost you something real and I will not decorate that. What I am telling you is that the blessing was never routed through the people who did not say it, so their silence never intercepted it.
You are not late to this, and you have not missed a window. Scripture says His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:23), which is a sentence written by a man in ruins, and it is the Spirit's work to make a line like that arrive on time rather than merely be true in general. It is four o'clock on an ordinary Tuesday and it is on time.
So here is where we are, with about nine minutes left on that hearing.
The blessing exists. God spoke it, He settled it in Christ before you were born, it is written down where anybody can check it, and the Holy Spirit is here in this side room to make it live rather than only to make it accurate. What was missing was never the blessing. What was missing was a voice, and yours is the most trained voice in the building.
You are blessed, right now, at four o'clock, in a room you will not remember by Friday, and not knowing how to feel about that changes nothing. Nobody has ever had to produce a feeling in order to receive what God has already said. Faith is an open hand and not a performance, and it is God who fills the hand; the Spirit does the carrying, and what He carries is what is written.
I am not going to tell you what happens next in your family, or whether anybody ever says it to you out loud. That belongs to God and I have no authority to promise it, and you would hear it immediately if I tried. What I can tell you is what is already settled, because it is written and I am only reading it out where you can hear it: God called you by your name, personally, and He did not use a service to do it.
You have spoken in the first person for twenty years on behalf of strangers, and His Spirit is standing by to carry the one sentence that is yours. Speak it once, in the first person, about yourself.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, sitting up, because a blessing is spoken and not thought. You have the standing to say them, and not because twenty years finally bought you a turn to be the subject of a sentence. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak God's word over your own head is His, handed to you and carried by His Spirit. Scripture says whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt shall have what he says. Says. Out loud. So say it here, in this room, to the quiet you have been mistaking for the ordinary shape of things. Whatever He does about the people who never said it, that is His to decide, and none of it is yours to produce.
- Twenty years of other people's sentences, you are my work and you are not my name. Scripture says He has called me by my name, and He has never once needed an interpreter.
- Habit of reading a missing thing as the normal shape of a room, get out in the name of Jesus. It is written that He knew me before He formed me, and He has never mistaken me for the voice that carries everybody else.
- Lord, You are saying it over me now, in my own first language, in Your own voice. I thank You, because Your face is shining and Your Spirit is the one carrying it, and I am sitting here in the first person about myself for the first time in twenty years.
